The United Kingdom Government is taking a direct position in Kenya’s public equity market through a US$15 million subscription to the initial public offering of QuickMart PLC, one of the country’s established supermarket chains. The investment, made through the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office’s (FCDO) MOBILIST programme, represents approximately KES 1.94 billion and 13% of the retailer’s KES 15 billion IPO.
Announced on 21 October 2026, the subscription comes as QuickMart prepares to list on the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE), in a transaction that will introduce a broader group of investors to the retailer’s ownership structure. The offering also brings development finance and public-market investment promotion into a consumer retail transaction, with MOBILIST seeking to expand the range of investment opportunities available through African capital markets.
The investment builds on the UK Government’s partnership with the NSE to encourage new listings and deepen participation by domestic and international institutional investors. It also follows a previously disclosed conditional cornerstone commitment of up to US$15 million from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the World Bank Group institution focused on private-sector development.
QuickMart’s KES 15 Billion Share Offering
QuickMart’s IPO comprises 2 billion existing ordinary shares, representing 50% of its issued share capital, offered by Sokoni Retail Kenya Limited at KES 7.50 per share.
At the offer price of KES 7.50 per share, the 2 billion shares imply a total offer value of KES 15 billion. The proposed sale of 50% of the issued share capital also implies an equity value of KES 30 billion for QuickMart at the IPO price, assuming the offer price applies uniformly to the entire issued share capital.
MOBILIST’s US$15 million subscription represents approximately 13% of the offer at the stated Kenya shilling equivalent.
The IFC has separately announced a conditional cornerstone commitment to purchase up to US$15 million of offer shares, subject to approval by its Board. This commitment is distinct from MOBILIST’s subscription, and the two investments should not be treated as equivalent in status: MOBILIST’s subscription has been announced, while the IFC commitment remains conditional.
The offer is scheduled to close at 5:00 p.m. East Africa Time on 30 October 2026, with trading on the NSE expected to commence on 12 November 2026, subject to the offer conditions and any formally announced changes to the timetable.
MOBILIST Expands Its Role in Kenya’s Public Markets
The QuickMart investment forms part of MOBILIST’s wider mandate to mobilise capital through public markets in developing economies.
A UK Government programme delivered through the FCDO, MOBILIST invests capital, provides technical assistance, conducts research and develops partnerships intended to bring new investment products to public markets. Its approach seeks to expand the range of listed opportunities available to investors while supporting the mobilisation of private capital towards development objectives.
In Kenya, the programme’s work has included a 2024 partnership with the NSE to broaden the range of listed investment opportunities and encourage greater participation by domestic institutions, including pension funds.
The partnership reflects an effort to strengthen the role of public equity and other listed instruments in financing businesses and infrastructure. By supporting new listings, the programme seeks to provide investors with additional avenues for deploying capital while broadening the investor base available to issuers.
The QuickMart transaction extends that strategy into the consumer retail sector, adding an established operating business to the pipeline of investment opportunities supported by MOBILIST.
Two Earlier Listings in 2026
The QuickMart subscription follows two NSE listings supported by MOBILIST earlier in 2026, spanning industrial real estate and infrastructure investment.
The programme invested US$9 million as a cornerstone investor in the listing of the Africa Logistics Properties Industrial Real Estate Investment Trust (ALP REIT). The investment provided support for a listed vehicle focused on industrial real estate.
MOBILIST also anchored the Spearhead Africa Infrastructure Fund, described in the announcement as Kenya’s first listed infrastructure fund, with an investment of approximately KES 1.2 billion. The fund raised KES 3.4 billion to provide long-term, local-currency financing for infrastructure.
These transactions illustrate the programme’s focus on expanding the types of assets accessible through public markets. The ALP REIT provides exposure to industrial real estate, while the Spearhead fund is designed to channel financing towards infrastructure. QuickMart adds a consumer-facing operating business to this mix.
